Getting a Tattoo FAQ - Most common questions asked?

Whenever you get a tattoo, there’s never a question that’s too “stupid” to ask.  In fact, there are a number of common questions that many people ask before getting their tattoo, especially if it is their very first.  Remember:  if you go into a tattoo shop and feel uncomfortable, the artist or assistant will be helpful with any questions you may have.  If not, then you should probably go elsewhere.

Getting a tattoo isn’t at all like joining some elite club---anyone can do it, so you need to be comfortable.  You should feel free to ask any question that you want.  Read on to see if any of the questions you have about getting a tattoo are answered here.

Does it hurt?

This is a pretty common question, and the obvious answer is “yes”.  But, everybody has a different thresh hold of pain, and tattoos hurt a lot for some people and not much for others.  There is even a bumper sticker that says, “If tattoos felt like orgasms, everyone would have them!”  This is true, so you should expect a tattoo to hurt.

Are there certain places where tattoos hurt more than others?

Yes, there are places on your body where a tattoo will hurt more.  This has to do with how thin the skin is on top of the bone, as well as muscle and fat.  But, in the long run, wherever you  get your tattoo should not be based on the amount of pain you are afraid of experiencing.  They’re all going to hurt on some level or another.  Pick your tattoo spot because you want it on that area of your body.  It will be on you for the rest of your life, after all, so that should be the most important consideration.

How much do tattoos usually cost?

Tattoos can be expensive, especially if you want a large, colorful one.  They are definitely not cheap.  Remember, you are paying for a professional piece of art, so you can’t expect to walk into a shop and be presented with a cheap price.  Usually, tattoo shops have set prices for you to ask about.  It’s also not uncommon to be charged more money to get a tattoo on a specific part of the body.  Also, custom designs cost more than ones that you pick out of a portfolio or book.

Are tattoos safe?

This will depend on the shop and the artist.  Always s pay close attention to the cleanliness of a shop and how the artist handles the equipment.  Does the artist wipe down the area before and after every single client?  Are new needles being used every time?  Has your artist and the shop been in business for awhile?  What type of training does the artist have?  Does he/she wear gloves?  These are the questions you should consider before getting a tattoo.

Should I tip the tattoo artist?

An artist will always appreciate it if you do, particularly the ones who don’t run the shop.  If it’s a large shop with more than one artist, then you may want to consider it, but it’s totally up to you.
